Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy crime fiction with genuine moral complexity, where characters aren't simply good or bad but shaped by circumstance and survival.
  • You want coming-of-age stories set in gritty, real historical settings rather than sanitised versions of the past.
  • You appreciate ensemble narratives where disparate characters collide and transform each other through crisis.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer straightforward crime procedurals with clear-cut heroes and villains rather than morally ambiguous protagonists.
  • You're looking for fast-paced thrillers that prioritise plot momentum over character development and emotional weight.
  • You want contemporary settings; historical crime fiction set in the 1950s doesn't appeal to you.

About this book

Weepers is set in 1957 New York City, where an undercover cop is murdered in a housing project. This crime connects to an unsolved disappearance from six years earlier—a young father and his son, Angelo, vanished on Christmas Eve in the same location. Angelo, now 13, witnesses the cop's murder while seeking his own revenge in the early morning hours. The killers know he saw them. The story follows how a priest, a Mafia boss, a police detective, and Angelo—a gang member—become bound together by these events. The narrative explores how the underdog's courage in the face of fear and moral ambiguity can overcome intimidation.
