About this book

When You Were Older follows Russell Ammiano, who receives a phone call on September 11th, 2001, that prevents him from being in New York during the attacks. The call forces him to leave the city he loves and return to Kansas. Russell's estranged brother Ben lives in Kansas. Ben is mentally disabled and relies on routine; any disruption to his ordered life causes him distress. Russell's unexpected return upends Ben's world. The novel explores how the two brothers must confront their difficult past and learn from each other in order to move forward together in the aftermath of tragedy.
