About this book

Why We Fought presents seven largely untold stories of people who resisted Nazi Germany during World War II at great personal risk. The accounts span beyond conventional battlefields to include diverse forms of resistance. One group was the Ghost Army, soldiers composed of former artists, actors, and engineers who conducted top-secret tactical deceptions. Using inflatable tanks, radio transmissions, and sound effects, they staged decoy armies to trick German forces throughout the war, often operating near intense front-line fighting. Another account follows William Sebold, a German immigrant and US citizen. When the Gestapo coerced him into becoming a spy in America, he instead approached the FBI and became a double agent. His work helped dismantle a German spy network operating in the United States that sought to steal industrial and wartime secrets and sabotage the country. These stories illustrate how ordinary citizens and soldiers confronted a fundamental moral question as Nazi tyranny spread across Europe: how to respond to fascist aggression. The book documents men and women who chose resistance and fought for freedom and democracy despite personal danger.
