Witchcraft: A Graphic History: Stories of wise women, healers and magic (Graphic MBS)

Witchcraft: A Graphic History uses the story of Lindsay, a curious 19th-century young woman, and her encounters with Biddy Early to explore the world of witchcraft and its practices. Biddy Early (1798–1874) was an Irish wise woman from County Clare who used magic to heal, protect, and empower her community. According to tradition, she apprenticed with the sidhe or faeries as a young person and learned healing skills from them. Rather than accepting payment, Biddy exchanged her services for home-brewed alcohol, making her cottage in Feakle a gathering place for locals. When the Catholic Church and local authorities took notice, her life became difficult. The book covers themes of self-empowerment, feminism, dealing with stigma, and eco-spirituality, alongside plant magic, traditions, and green wisdom. It examines how historical witchcraft continues to generate interest and reflection today. This graphic novel is part of a series that also includes Tarot: A Graphic History and Goddesses: A Graphic History, each offering illustrated explorations of magic, mysticism, and notable women in these traditions. The book was shortlisted for The British Book Design Awards.
