Written in Red is the first novel in Anne Bishop's fantasy series set in a world where unearthly entities—including vampires and shape-shifters—rule the Earth and prey on humans. Meg Corbyn is a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, who can see the future when her skin is cut. Her Controller has kept her enslaved to exploit her visions. When Meg escapes, she seeks refuge at the Lakeside Courtyard, a business district operated by the Others. Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter, is hesitant to hire the mysterious stranger who applies for the Human Liaison position. He senses she harbors secrets and doesn't smell like typical human prey. However, a stronger instinct leads him to offer her the job.
