Perfect for you if...

  • You're curious about history beyond the standard textbook narrative and want the archaeological evidence that rewrites what we thought we knew.
  • You enjoy narrative non-fiction that combines science, history, and anthropology into a compelling reexamination of established facts.
  • You appreciate meticulous research that challenges common assumptions and reveals just how advanced indigenous cultures actually were.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer your history books shorter and more narrowly focused; this is 578 pages of dense, wide-ranging argument and evidence.
  • You're looking for a quick overview rather than a deep dive into contested academic questions and methodology.
  • You want a simple story with clear heroes and villains rather than complex, nuanced accounts of pre-Columbian societies.

About this book

Charles C. Mann presents a reexamination of the Americas before Columbus's arrival in 1492, drawing on science, history, and archaeology. The book challenges the common school narrative that pre-Columbian Indians were sparsely distributed across a pristine wilderness. Instead, Mann argues that large Indian populations actively shaped and modified their environment. The Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan featured running water and clean streets, and was larger than any contemporary European city. Mexican cultures developed corn through specialized breeding processes sometimes compared to man's first feat of genetic engineering. Rather than living lightly on the land, Indians engaged in landscaping and environmental manipulation in ways that are only now becoming understood.
