Perfect for you if...

  • You love character-driven survival stories where the emotional stakes matter as much as the physical ones.
  • You're drawn to quiet, isolated protagonists who find strength through necessity and connection.
  • You want a page-turner that doesn't sacrifice atmosphere or heart for plot.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need fast-paced action from page one and find slower character establishment tedious.
  • You prefer ensemble casts and multiple perspectives over a single, introspective narrator.
  • You're looking for a feel-good story: this one earns its hope through real loss and hardship.

About this book

When a beloved family dog is stolen, a teenager named Griz embarks on a journey through a post-apocalyptic world to recover her. Griz has grown up isolated on a remote island with her parents and dogs, never attending school or meeting enough people to form a large group. Her parents have told her about a time when the world was crowded with people, before they disappeared. Life on the island was never lonely because of her family and their dogs. Everything changes when a thief arrives and takes one of the dogs, prompting Griz to set out across the ruins of the world in search of her pet. The story explores themes of survival, courage, and hope as Griz faces the challenges of her journey.
