About this book

Professor Von Hardwigg and his nephew Henry discover a mysterious parchment that, after careful study and research, they decipher to reveal a sixteenth-century text by an Icelandic philosopher claiming to have found a passage to the centre of the Earth. Uncertain whether it is genuine or a hoax, they decide to investigate. Accompanied by their guide Hans Bjelke, the two men set out to climb Mount Sneffels. Upon reaching the summit, they search for a crater believed to lead to the centre of the Earth, driven by the prospect of discovering a subterranean world inhabited by prehistoric life forms and mythical monsters. Published in 1864, this science fiction novel by Jules Verne contributed significantly to the popularity of subterranean fiction, a genre that existed before Verne's work. The novel influenced later writings, including Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar series, which explicitly acknowledged Verne's influence.
