Published in 1864, this science fiction novel by Jules Verne contributed significantly to the popularity of subterranean fiction, a genre that existed before Verne's work. The novel influenced later writings, including Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar series, which explicitly acknowledged Verne's influence.
