Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy cosy mysteries with genuine humour and British village charm, especially ones that don't take themselves too seriously.
  • You love Agatha Christie's wit but want something lighter and more contemporary, with romantic tension woven through the plot.
  • You're drawn to amateur sleuths who stumble into detection and have actual jobs and lives beyond solving crimes.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer dark, gritty crime fiction with high body counts and graphic violence.
  • You want police procedurals with technical detail and forensic accuracy rather than cosy village antics.
  • You're sceptical of stories where cats cause mayhem and meddling grandmothers are helpful detectives.

About this book

Gemma leaves her corporate career to open a traditional English tearoom in Oxford, only to become entangled in a murder investigation when an American tourist is killed with one of her signature scones. To save her struggling business, she turns amateur detective. The case is led by a CID detective who happens to be her former college boyfriend—a situation that distresses her mother, who is determined to arrange a more suitable match. With assistance from the "Old Biddies," a group of elderly village residents who see themselves as amateur sleuths, Gemma investigates suspects and false leads. A mischievous tabby cat adds further complications to the investigation. Using her Oxford connections, Gemma uncovers secrets from the university's past. As the body count increases and her tearoom faces financial ruin, she races to identify the killer before her future collapses. Set in historic Oxford and the English Cotswolds, this traditional mystery features humor, twists, and romantic elements. The book uses British English spelling and contains no graphic violence, sexual content, or strong language.
