About this book

Peter Block presents a vision of society organized around cooperation and community rather than competition and commodification. He argues against the narrative that humans are inherently polarized, violent, selfish, and destructive. Instead, Block contends that we operate under an economic theology centered on scarcity, self-interest, competition, and infinite growth—what he calls the business perspective narrative. This framework extends beyond economics into architecture, faith communities, journalism, arts, and neighborhoods. Block proposes an alternative: the common good narrative. This perspective holds that humans are fundamentally communal and cooperative, with the capacity to collectively produce what matters most: child-rearing, safety, livelihood, health, and a clean, sustainable environment. The book explores how adopting a common good perspective could reshape multiple sectors. It describes journalism that reports on what works, architecture that creates habitable spaces fostering connection, faith communities that build social bonds, restrained and local markets, and leadership and activism that generate social capital through citizen trust. Block argues these shifts would fundamentally improve the world.
