About this book

Virginia D'Albert-Lake's account documents her experience fighting the Nazis alongside her husband in the French Resistance. She met Philippe d'Albert-Lake during a 1936 visit to France and married him shortly after. In 1943, both joined the Resistance, where Virginia sheltered downed airmen and was eventually captured and imprisoned in a Nazi camp. After the war, she remained in France with Philippe and received the Légion d'Honneur and the Medal of Honor. The book combines two primary documents: Virginia's diary covering wartime France until her 1944 capture, and a prison memoir she wrote immediately after the war. Together, these texts provide a firsthand record of the French Resistance from one of the few American women who participated in it.
