Norman Cousins's firsthand account describes his experience with a debilitating collagen illness and his approach to recovery. A political journalist, activist, and professor of medical humanities at UCLA, Cousins studied the biochemistry of human emotions and their relationship to healing. When hospitalized, he decided to take an active role in his treatment, working with his doctor to develop a regimen of laughter and vitamin C tailored to his condition. The treatment proved successful, leading Cousins to conclude that a positive attitude was central to his improvement. Cousins later documented his recovery in this account, analyzing his experience in relation to holistic medicine and exploring the relationship between mind and body in healing.
