About this book

Battleships represented the peak of naval power, particularly during the later British Empire, when the Royal Navy built the first dreadnought battleship in 1906. This new design featured a uniform main battery and steam turbines, making it faster and more accurate than previous vessels. It sparked a naval race with Germany that culminated in the Battle of Jutland in 1916, the only fleet-to-fleet naval battle of the First World War. Inter-war treaties restricted battleship construction, but a new generation emerged in the Second World War. Japan secretly built Yamato and Musashi, among the most powerful battleships ever constructed. World War Two marked the height of battleship warfare, with pivotal engagements including the Battle of Denmark Strait (where HMS Hood was sunk), the second Battle of Guadalcanal, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The German, Japanese, Royal, and US navies engaged in large-scale combat across vast distances. However, the development of aircraft carriers and increased use of torpedoes gradually rendered battleships obsolete. No battleship has seen active service since the 1990s. This short history provides an overview of the battleship's origins, its role in both World Wars, notable ships and their histories, and the weaponry and technology they employed.
