Perfect for you if...

  • You're an investor trying to spot bubbles before they pop, and you want to understand the actual mechanics behind speculative frenzies.
  • You're fascinated by economic history and want to know why some innovations (railways, electricity, the web) triggered manias while others (refrigeration, the zipper) didn't.
  • You work in tech or finance and appreciate hard data over punditry. Goldfarb and Kirsch back their arguments with eighty-eight technologies across 150 years.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a crystal ball for predicting the next crash. This book identifies patterns but doesn't guarantee you'll time the market.
  • You're looking for a narrative-driven story about famous bubbles. This is academic analysis with practical takeaways, not sensational storytelling.
  • You prefer bite-sized takes on economics. At 264 pages with rigorous methodology, this requires sustained attention.

About this book

Financial market bubbles in technology industries are recurring events with significant economic consequences. While many books examine financial manias and crises, most do not compare periods of turmoil with periods of stability. Bubbles and Crashes examines the causes of speculative booms and busts by studying major technological innovations—a class of assets that can, but does not necessarily, produce bubbles. Using a sample of eighty-eight technologies spanning 150 years, Goldfarb and Kirsch identify four factors that play a key role in bubble episodes: the degree of uncertainty surrounding a particular innovation; the presence of novice investors; the opportunity to directly invest in companies specializing in the technology; and whether a technology functions as a compelling narrative. The authors consider implications of their analysis for current technology bubbles, provide tools for investors to identify whether a bubble is occurring, and propose policy measures to mitigate risks associated with future speculative episodes.
