Perfect for you if...

  • You want experimental fiction that doesn't explain itself and rewards rereading, with genuine philosophical weight beneath the strangeness.
  • You're interested in how sci-fi can explore identity, race, and sexuality without preaching, through a protagonist who's deliberately enigmatic.
  • You appreciate dense, layered prose that treats the city itself as a character, where the plot matters less than the texture of living in a broken world.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need clear plot structure and straightforward answers. This novel circles back on itself and leaves you uncertain about what actually happened.
  • You prefer character-driven stories with conventional relationships. The Kid's connections are strange, fragmentary, and often uncomfortable.
  • You want a quick read. At 880 pages with recurring motifs and non-linear sections, this demands time and attention.

About this book

A Nebula Award Finalist, this science fiction novel by Samuel R. Delany follows a young half-Native American known as the Kid who hitchhikes from Mexico to Bellona, a Midwestern city where reality has become unhinged following a nameless cataclysm. The Kid arrives in this shattered metropolis with his fist wrapped in razor-sharp knives, seeking to write, love, and wound. Dhalgren is structured as a labyrinth that explores questions about race, sexuality, identity, and art without offering simple resolutions. The city itself continuously reshapes itself as the narrative progresses. The novel includes a foreword by William Gibson and an illustrated biography of Samuel R. Delany with rare images from his early career.
