Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by philosophical questions about what makes us human, especially when technology blurs the line.
  • You love the Blade Runner films and want to experience the tighter, weirder source material that inspired them.
  • You appreciate speculative fiction that feels urgent and relevant decades after publication, not dated.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need a fast-paced plot that doesn't pause for existential reflection. This book dwells in uncomfortable questions.
  • You prefer uplifting science fiction. This is bleak throughout, with no redemptive arc for anyone involved.
  • You want straightforward prose. Dick's writing loops back on itself, which works thematically but can feel scattered.

About this book

By 2021, a world war has killed millions, driven species to extinction, and forced humanity off-planet. Those remaining on Earth covet living creatures. Unable to afford real animals, people purchase realistic artificial versions—horses, birds, cats, sheep—and even androids. Androids sent to Mars as companions for immigrants are so sophisticated they cannot be distinguished from humans. Fearing their potential danger, the government prohibits androids from Earth. Unauthorized androids hide among the human population, undetected. Rick Deckard, a sanctioned bounty hunter, is tasked with locating rogue androids and retiring them. When cornered, these androids defend themselves with lethal force. The novel served as inspiration for the film Blade Runner.
