Perfect for you if...

  • You've been training horses using natural horsemanship methods and are ready to question whether even those techniques are limiting your horse's potential.
  • You're frustrated by the constant focus on dominance and control in equestrian communities and want to understand what genuine partnership actually looks like.
  • You believe horses have agency and inner motivation, and you're curious about training approaches based on that premise rather than behavioural conditioning.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for quick fixes or step-by-step training instructions. This book challenges foundational assumptions rather than offering a how-to manual.
  • You're deeply invested in traditional or natural horsemanship dogma and aren't interested in questioning its core premises.
  • You prefer practical arena techniques over exploring the philosophy and psychology of human-horse relationships.

About this book

In the 1980s, natural horsemanship emerged as a major shift in riding, training, and competing with horses. This approach rejects abusive techniques and bases methods on understanding free-roaming horse herds. Since then, equestrians across disciplines have adopted elements of natural horsemanship. Despite these improvements in human-equine interaction, Italian animal behaviorists Francesco de Giorgio and José de Giorgio-Schoorl question fundamental assumptions: What if much of what we know about horses is wrong? What if herd hierarchy is a myth? What if conditioning horse behavior in conventional ways limits their development potential? What if a better partnership is possible? The book challenges assumptions about leadership, dominance, and control. It presents an alternative view in which horses, when given the opportunity, are driven by inner motivation to explore and understand their surroundings, including their relationship with humans.
