Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by how environmental shifts reshape history and want evidence that climate change has always been a geopolitical force.
  • You enjoy densely researched history that connects global events most books treat separately, showing patterns across continents.
  • You appreciate primary sources and firsthand accounts woven into analysis, not just abstract arguments about why the past happened.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer narrative-driven history that moves quickly. Parker's 870 pages dig deep into regional detail and scientific data, which can feel methodical.
  • You're looking for a book that takes a clear ideological stance on modern climate policy. This is historical analysis, not a platform for contemporary arguments.
  • You want fiction or story-based accounts. This is scholarly work that demands active reading and patience with complexity.

About this book

Geoffrey Parker examines the connection between climate change and widespread social upheaval during the mid-seventeenth century. Between 1618 and the late 1680s, the world experienced an unprecedented frequency and severity of crises—revolutions, droughts, famines, invasions, wars, regicides, and government collapses—that affected regions from England to Japan, the Russian Empire to sub-Saharan Africa, and the Americas. Parker draws on firsthand accounts from people who lived through the political, economic, and social upheavals of this period, known as the "General Crisis." He integrates scientific evidence of climate change into his narrative, showing how shifts in weather patterns—particularly longer winters and cooler, wetter summers—disrupted agricultural cycles and destroyed harvests. These environmental changes triggered widespread hunger, malnutrition, and disease, which in turn sparked wars, rebellions, and revolutions across the globe.
