Golden Hills: A Short Story

A short story about a complicated friendship and a youthful betrayal that continues to affect two women's lives. Ida Berkowitz, a senatorial candidate, appears headed for victory. Raised by a widowed mother, she is seen as authentic and relatable. Her campaign is polling well until her manager raises an unexpected problem: Marissa Schuyler, Ida's bunkmate from Camp Golden Hills in their childhood, has announced a press conference about her. Marissa was confident, sophisticated, and wealthy—everything Ida was not. Now married to a major conservative donor, Marissa's planned announcement triggers Ida's old insecurities and new dread. Ida knows the subject concerns something from their past that is unflattering and could damage everything she has worked to build.
