Perfect for you if...

  • You're a leader or manager who wants to spot warning signs of decline before they become catastrophic.
  • You've watched successful companies stumble and wondered what separates those that bounce back from those that don't.
  • You're running a growing business and need to understand which habits of success can actually poison future performance.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a quick fix or tactical playbook. This is research-driven analysis, not a step-by-step action plan.
  • You want inspiration about scrappy startups or underdogs. Collins focuses on how the already-great lose their way.
  • You prefer narrative storytelling over data and frameworks. This book uses case studies as evidence, not entertainment.

About this book

Jim Collins examines why once-successful companies experience decline and whether that decline can be prevented, detected early, or reversed. Based on research spanning more than four years, Collins identifies five stages of decline: Hubris Born of Success, Undisciplined Pursuit of More, Denial of Risk and Peril, Grasping for Salvation, and Capitulation to Irrelevance or Death. Collins argues that understanding these stages allows leaders to reduce the risk of severe organizational failure. While every institution, regardless of its strength, remains vulnerable to decline, some companies have recovered even after reaching the depths of Stage 4. According to Collins' research, decline is largely self-inflicted, and recovery depends primarily on internal choices rather than external circumstances or history. As long as a company remains engaged, recovery remains possible. Great companies can stumble significantly and still find their way back.
