  • You're curious about financial literacy programmes and what structural changes poor communities actually need.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a deep critique of capitalism or a radical reimagining of the entire economic system.
  • You prefer academic analysis with extensive data visualisations and peer-reviewed research over personal narrative.
  • You're seeking stories from poor communities themselves rather than solutions proposed by a successful businessman.

About this book

John Hope Bryant, a self-made entrepreneur and founder of the nonprofit Operation HOPE, argues that business and political leaders have overlooked a critical resource for revitalizing the American economy: the poor. Bryant contends that with appropriate tools, policies, and inspiration, poor communities can lift themselves into the middle class, creating new customers and entrepreneurs. Raised in South Central Los Angeles, Bryant witnessed how institutions have abandoned low-income communities, with business loans, home loans, and financial investments disappearing from these areas. The poor often lack bank accounts, adequate credit scores, and understanding of how free enterprise functions. Bryant redefines poverty and wealth beyond financial measures to include values. He examines why previous aid efforts have failed and proposes the HOPE Plan—a series of concrete steps to build financial literacy and expand opportunity for the poor to reach the middle class. Since consumer spending drives seventy percent of the American economy, Bryant seeks to extend free enterprise philosophy to include all people, creating an economy that functions for everyone rather than just the wealthy or the majority.
