Lost Amusement Parks of New York City: Beyond Coney Island

A historical survey of amusement parks across New York City's five boroughs, featuring archival photographs. While Coney Island remains the most recognized turn-of-the-century amusement destination in New York, numerous other parks entertained residents throughout the city. Located strategically along trolley lines, railways, public beaches, and waterways, these parks first emerged in 1767 and served audiences of all economic backgrounds. They grew from modest origins into substantial complexes like Fort George, Manhattan's major amusement site. Each park reflected the cultural preferences and individual vision of its owners and visitors—from wooden roller coasters at Staten Island's Midland Beach to beer gardens at Queens' North Beach and fireworks displays at the Bronx's Starlight Park. As real estate values increased, these parks closed and disappeared. This book documents their history and allows readers to explore the attractions of these now-lost New York City amusement parks.
