Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in how democracies actually collapse, not through one dramatic coup but through the slow erosion of norms by people who assume the system will survive their cynicism.
  • You want to understand the institutional mechanics of political breakdown without the armchair psychology or sweeping theories.
  • You're drawing uncomfortable parallels between Roman politics and contemporary governance and want the historical detail to back up your concerns.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for military history or tales of conquest. This is about backroom politics and institutional decay, not battles.
  • You prefer narrative-driven storytelling over analytical explanation. Watts builds an argument across centuries rather than following individual characters.
  • You want a quick, accessible read. This demands engagement with complex political structures and repeated dynasties.

About this book

In Mortal Republic, historian Edward Jay Watts examines how the Roman Republic fell into autocracy. For centuries, Rome's governing institutions, parliamentary rules, and political customs enabled negotiation and compromise as the city grew into the Mediterranean's dominant military and political power. By the 130s BC, however, Rome's leaders began using these same tools to pursue personal gain and obstruct opponents. As central authority weakened and dysfunction increased, political disagreements escalated into street violence. This instability set the stage for destructive civil wars and ultimately the imperial reign of Augustus. Watts argues that the Republic's collapse was not inevitable. Rather, it died because Romans who believed it would endure indefinitely allowed it to be destroyed through countless small acts of damage.
