About this book

Morvelving, an exile burdened by the vices responsible for his son's death, contemplates ending his life. His plans change when he meets Nippiktua, an orphan child who is mute, deaf, and marked by the Fates with a tendency toward mischief. Despite his guilt, Morvelving refuses to abandon her to her dangerous destiny and commits to finding her a safe, hidden home. Their journey proves difficult and perilous. Along the way, they encounter a mystical Stag, escape warmongering centaurs, clash with an obstinate prince, and flee from a dragon's zealots. When the zealots capture Nippiktua to sacrifice her to the dragon, Morvelving must overcome his fears and race to rescue the child from the Fates' control in the shadow of the tyrannical dragon.
