Perfect for you if...

  • You love true crime cases that don't have neat answers and make you question whether justice was actually served.
  • You're drawn to stories about how island politics and tourism pressure can derail investigations.
  • You appreciate detailed courtroom narratives that explore the lives and circumstances of the accused, not just the victim.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer true crime with a clear resolution and a killer definitively proven guilty.
  • You want graphic descriptions of the crime itself rather than the legal and investigative aftermath.
  • You're looking for a fast-paced page-turner rather than a methodical, detailed examination of a complex case.

About this book

Murder in Paradise is a true crime account of the unsolved murder of Lois McMillan, a thirty-four-year-old Connecticut artist, and the criminal trial of four male suspects. On January 15, 2000, McMillan's bruised body was discovered on the rocks of an inlet in the British Virgin Islands, where she appeared to have drowned. Local authorities on Tortola determined her death was not accidental. Police quickly identified four young, wealthy American tourists as suspects. All four were arrested for murder within twenty-four hours, moving from a life of leisure to jail cells. Each man had an alibi, none had a clear motive, and no direct evidence connected any of them to McMillan's death. The case raises questions about whether authorities arrested the right men, whether the investigation represented a rush to judgment driven by a desire to protect Tortola's reputation, or whether the suspects were concealing a serious crime. The book examines the swift island justice process that followed, the lives of the four men involved, and the circumstances surrounding McMillan's final hours.
