About this book

This photographic history examines the Battle of the Hedgerows, a grueling and vital phase of the Normandy campaign in World War II. After the D-Day landings, the US First Army advanced westward through the Norman bocage country, where they encountered fierce German resistance from fortified hedgerow positions. The Americans adapted their tactics and deployed specialized equipment, including bulldozers and tanks fitted with hedgerow cutters, to break through the terrain. Despite severe casualties, First Army overcame these tactical challenges and pushed forward to Saint-Lô. Using over 150 carefully selected and captioned wartime photographs, the book traces the battle's progression and conveys the conditions, terrain, and experiences faced by the troops involved.
