Ryan survived a near-fatal convoy incident in military service and gained the ability to see ghosts. His best friend is Carl, an undead child who has transformed Ryan's life into something resembling a video game, complete with character sheets, perks, and abilities. Ryan's past troubles him deeply, and he has become emotionally stagnant—moving through life as though he were undead himself. Seeking a fresh start, Ryan takes a new job in Noxfield, West Virginia, working in ghost-hunting with specialized equipment and new colleagues. He hopes this move will help him move forward and reclaim his life. However, Noxfield proves far more haunted and dangerous than Ryan anticipated. The town harbors threats that exceed anything from his past or previous encounters with the supernatural. West Virginia is haunted by more than just ghosts, and what awaits Ryan there challenges everything he thought he understood about his second chance.
