Lee plotted separate routes for his infantry and artillery to accelerate movement and protect his forces. Meanwhile, Meade, uncertain of Lee's intentions, sent Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick's VI Corps to scout the Confederate position and confirmed Lee was retreating toward Virginia. Meade launched a pursuit along multiple routes, attempting to strike Lee's exhausted army without exposing his own troops to counterattack.
