About this book

Race to the Potomac examines the ten-day period following the Battle of Gettysburg, focusing on Robert E. Lee's retreat and George Meade's pursuit. Even as fighting ended at Gettysburg, Lee began organizing his defeated Confederate army's withdrawal to northern Virginia. He assembled two wagon trains—one for wounded soldiers and another for supplies gathered during the campaign through Pennsylvania and Maryland. Lee plotted separate routes for his infantry and artillery to accelerate movement and protect his forces. Meanwhile, Meade, uncertain of Lee's intentions, sent Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick's VI Corps to scout the Confederate position and confirmed Lee was retreating toward Virginia. Meade launched a pursuit along multiple routes, attempting to strike Lee's exhausted army without exposing his own troops to counterattack. Union cavalry targeted Lee's vulnerable wagon trains, engaging Jeb Stuart's cavalry in several encounters that resulted in the loss of hundreds of vehicles, capture of wounded soldiers, and seizure of supplies. Most of Lee's wagons reached Williamsport, Maryland, only to discover Union troops had destroyed the pontoon bridge. Lee's army regrouped at Hagerstown, established defensive positions, and raced to construct a pontoon bridge across the swollen Potomac at Falling Waters. Throughout the pursuit, Meade sought opportunities to attack Lee's army decisively.
