Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by real intelligence operations and want the unfiltered truth about how modern spy agencies actually work.
  • You loved Argo or Zero Dark Thirty and crave that same tension but in narrative form, from someone who lived it.
  • You're drawn to stories where ordinary people are thrust into extraordinary danger and have to improvise their way out.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want heavily redacted spy stories where the CIA confirms nothing—this is a firsthand account with details that still make some officials uncomfortable.
  • You prefer pure espionage thrillers with plot twists over procedural accuracy and the messy reality of fieldwork.
  • You're looking for a quick read about famous spy cases—this focuses on one specific, previously unacknowledged crisis in depth.

About this book

Andrew and Jihi Bustamante were a married pair of CIA operatives who met as trainees at Langley and later worked together hunting terrorists globally. They were assigned to a highly classified mission after the CIA's source network in a country code-named "Falcon"—identified as one of America's major rivals—was compromised by a mole within the agency. As newlyweds with no prior experience in Falcon, the Bustamantes were selected for the operation because they were considered expendable assets who could help rebuild intelligence collection while potentially serving as bait for the mole. However, they possessed knowledge of how terrorist cells operate, which they applied to develop a new intelligence-gathering approach. The Bustamantes assembled a team of operatives and recruited new sources from Falcon, creating an unconventional cell structure within the CIA itself. This account describes their role in one of the agency's major intelligence crises and details the methods used in contemporary espionage operations.
