Written by legendary military commander Sun Tzu (c. 544–496 BC), The Art of War is an ancient volume on strategy and victory. The book's thirteen chapters explore different aspects of warfare, serving as a guidebook on military strategy and tactics applicable to anyone facing conflict today. This special edition includes a new introduction by PEN Award-winning historian Mitch Horowitz and a complete translation of the Tao Te Ching, the ancient ethical work on which The Art of War stands. Both texts are translated by British Sinologist Lionel Giles (1875–1958). According to Horowitz, The Art of War is essentially a Taoist work whose core principle is to blend with the natural order of things, applying this approach to both conflict and the maintenance of peace. The Art of War has guided soldiers, generals, martial artists, and seekers throughout history.
