Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in geopolitics and want to understand how nuclear weapons actually spread in the real world, not just in headlines.
  • You read serious investigative journalism and respect reporters who go deep into dangerous territory to expose hidden networks.
  • You're concerned about security threats and want a grounded, factual account of nuclear proliferation risks from someone who's interviewed the key players.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer narrative-driven stories with characters you can root for. This is dense reporting that prioritises facts over drama.
  • You're looking for solutions or policy recommendations. Langewiesche diagnoses the problem but doesn't offer easy fixes.
  • You want reassurance that everything's under control. This book is deliberately unsettling and designed to challenge complacency.

About this book

William Langewiesche investigates the global threat of nuclear weapons production and the spread of nuclear technology from wealthy nations to poorer ones. As unstable and undeveloped nations acquire nuclear capabilities, state-sponsored nuclear activity has become increasingly dangerous. The book also examines the risk of non-state terrorist groups manufacturing and deploying such weapons. Langewiesche recounts the history of Abdul Qadeer Khan, a scientist involved in nuclear development and trade in the Middle East. Khan orchestrated the theft and sale of centrifuge designs that contributed to Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and sold nuclear plans to North Korea, Iran, and other countries. The book then explores the potential for nuclear terrorism in concrete detail. Drawing from events spanning Hiroshima to the present, Langewiesche presents an account of nuclear proliferation as a critical global concern.
