The Complete Book of Greek Cooking presents more than 200 recipes for traditional Greek home cooking and desserts. The collection draws from two earlier cookbooks created by the Recipe Club, a group of women from Saint Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Hempstead, New York, who originally compiled recipes to preserve traditional dishes and support their church. The Recipe Club's cookbooks gained recognition, including a feature in a New York Times article by food writer Florence Fabricant. This volume emphasizes Greek cuisine built on wholesome ingredients, particularly fresh vegetables, olive oil, and natural foods. Some recipes have been updated to reduce preparation time and lower calorie counts in desserts, while maintaining the traditional character of the dishes. Proceeds continue to support Saint Paul's Church. The book includes the Recipe Club's traditional closing wish: kalli orexi, meaning "good appetite."
