Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by Cold War espionage and want the technical details of how America's most secretive spy plane actually worked.
  • You love military aviation history and appreciate lavishly illustrated deep-dives with hundreds of photographs and specifications.
  • You respect engineering excellence and want to understand how Lockheed's Skunk Works pushed the boundaries of what was physically possible in 1964.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer narrative-driven storytelling over technical specifications and aircraft histories.
  • You're looking for personal memoir or dramatic Cold War spy tales rather than a comprehensive engineering reference.
  • You have no interest in aviation, military hardware, or the technical aspects of aircraft design and modification.

About this book

A comprehensive guide to the history, development, manufacture, modification, and service of all fifty aircraft in the SR-71 program. In 1964, President Johnson announced the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, a strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed Skunk Works. The plane flew at more than three-and-a-half times the speed of sound, faster than any other aircraft could match. Pilots flew at altitudes above 80,000 feet wearing full-pressure flight suits similar to those used on the space shuttle. The SR-71 remained in active service for thirty-four years until 1998, when satellite technology replaced it. Twelve of the thirty-two aircraft were lost in accidents, but none to enemy action. The plane held world records for both altitude (85,069 feet) and speed (2,193.2 miles per hour). This book examines the SR-71's development, manufacture, modification, and service from the perspective of one of its pilots. It includes over 400 photographs and profiles all fifty aircraft from the program: fifteen A-12s, three YF-12s, and thirty-two SR-71s. For each plane, the book details its specifications, history, and current location.
