The first volume of Hunter S. Thompson's Gonzo Papers series collects essays spanning from his National Observer days through his Rolling Stone era. Originally published in 1979 and now back in print, the collection features a new introduction by John Jeremiah Sullivan. The essays cover topics ranging from Nixon and Watergate to Las Vegas and cocaine, offering commentary on American politics and culture from the 1960s and 1970s. The collection includes "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved," which appeared in Scanlan's Monthly in 1970 and was the first piece to be labeled "gonzo" journalism by Thompson. Thompson's writing captures the era's contradictions through sharp insight and direct prose.
