Perfect for you if...

  • You care about human rights abuses and want to understand what actually happened inside Guantánamo Bay from someone who lived it.
  • You're drawn to memoirs that blend unflinching testimony with unexpected humour and grace under impossible circumstances.
  • You want to understand post-9/11 America's foreign policy failures through the eyes of someone caught in the machinery of injustice.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a quick read or light entertainment. This is dense, traumatic, and demands emotional labour from the reader.
  • You prefer narratives that spare difficult details. Slahi describes torture, psychological warfare, and systemic cruelty in vivid terms.
  • You want a neat, triumphalist story. This is a man's account of being imprisoned without trial, released, and rebuilding a life fractured by trauma.

About this book

Mohamedou Ould Slahi's account of his fourteen-year imprisonment at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, originally published in 2015 as Guantánamo Diary in heavily redacted form. Despite a federal court ruling ordering his release, Slahi remained detained until October 2016. The United States never charged him with a crime during his imprisonment. This edition restores previously censored material, allowing Slahi to tell his full story. The diary documents his experience as both a record of judicial injustice and a personal memoir that combines accounts of terror with dark humor and expressions of grace. The narrative explores the dangers posed by Guantánamo's continued operation and reflects on themes of betrayal, resilience, and humanity in the face of prolonged detention.
