Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by how wealth and power can shield someone from justice, and want to read about a case where the system finally caught up.
  • You love true crime stories with international angles. A fugitive on the run across Bangkok and beyond is exactly your kind of page-turner.
  • You appreciate well-researched narrative non-fiction that builds tension across decades. This isn't sensationalism. It's meticulous.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need a cosy read before bed. This is a brutal murder with graphic details and systemic corruption. It's heavy.
  • You prefer mysteries where the culprit is unknown. Here you're piecing together how a known suspect evaded justice for over a decade.
  • You want moral complexity and grey areas. James Sullivan is calculating and callous. There's little sympathy to find.

About this book

A true crime account of a marriage between Florida millionaire James Sullivan and Atlanta socialite Lita McClinton that ended in murder. Sullivan easily won over McClinton, but their relationship deteriorated in their Palm Beach mansion as McClinton's infidelity and social climbing created conflict. When McClinton sought a divorce and half of Sullivan's fortune, a hitman shot her three times in the head in 1987. McClinton's family pursued justice, but Sullivan used his wealth to evade accountability. Eleven years later, a surprise witness confession led to Sullivan's indictment. He fled the country, traveling to various locations before settling near Bangkok with his new fiancée at a resort, where he was arrested four years later. Marion Collins documents Sullivan's descent from Palm Beach prominence to imprisonment in a Thai jail cell, and his family's effort to secure justice for his crime.
