Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in Cold War history and want to understand America's actual foreign policy beyond the official story.
  • You care about how power operates behind closed doors and want to read primary sources, not speculation.
  • You appreciate meticulously researched political narratives that read like thrillers because they're true.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer uplifting narratives or books that don't dwell on systematic atrocity and state violence.
  • You're looking for a balanced, 'both sides' treatment rather than an evidence-based accountability focused account.
  • You want a quick read. This is dense, document-heavy, and demands your full attention.

About this book

This revised and updated edition documents US government involvement in General Augusto Pinochet's September 11, 1973, military coup in Chile. Published to mark the fortieth anniversary of the coup, the book presents declassified primary sources revealing American complicity in atrocities committed under Pinochet's regime. The updated edition extends the account through Pinochet's multiple indictments between 2004 and his death on December 10, 2006. It includes details of the Riggs Bank scandal, which exposed how Pinochet illegally accumulated over $26 million in secret American bank accounts. When first released in hardcover, the book contributed to international efforts to hold Pinochet accountable for murder, torture, and terrorism. A new afterword describes Henry Kissinger's attempt to undermine the book's reception, an effort that sparked a major scandal resulting in a high-level resignation at the Council on Foreign Relations.
