Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by ancient philosophy and want to read the actual texts rather than modern interpretations of Pythagorean ideas.
  • You're interested in how ancient thinkers connected mathematics, ethics, and cosmology into a unified worldview.
  • You study classical history, philosophy, or comparative religion and need a comprehensive primary source anthology.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a narrative biography of Pythagoras himself; this is source material, not a story.
  • You're looking for a quick introduction to Pythagorean thought; this is dense, scholarly work that demands careful reading.
  • You prefer modern retellings and analysis over wrestling with translated ancient texts.

About this book

Pythagoras (fl. 500 B.C.) was a mathematician and spiritual teacher who was the first to call himself a philosopher, or lover of wisdom. This anthology presents the largest collection of Pythagorean writings available in English, including four ancient biographies of Pythagoras and over 25 Pythagorean and Neopythagorean texts from the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The Pythagorean ethical and political writings in this collection are based on the idea that universal principles of Harmony, Proportion, and Justice govern the physical cosmos. These texts demonstrate how individuals and societies achieve excellence when guided by these same principles. The volume includes a foreword by Joscelyn Godwin and an introductory essay by editor David Fideler, along with indexed entries, illustrations, appendices, and an extensive bibliography.
