Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to firsthand military history and want to read a leader's actual observations from the field rather than a later retrospective.
  • You admire Roosevelt's blunt, energetic writing style and personality, even if you don't always agree with his politics.
  • You're interested in how ordinary Americans from different backgrounds fought together during a pivotal moment in US history.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer novels over memoirs, even gripping ones, because you want plot and character development rather than historical documentation.
  • You're looking for a critical examination of American imperialism and the Spanish-American War's consequences; this is a celebration, not an analysis.
  • You find 19th-century prose dense or difficult to get through without extensive modern annotation.

About this book

Theodore Roosevelt's memoir documents the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry and its role in the Spanish-American War, particularly the regiment's victory at San Juan Hill. Roosevelt and Col. Leonard Wood formed the unit to fight for Cuban independence, recruiting 1,250 men from diverse backgrounds including cowboys, frontiersmen, and Ivy League graduates. Known as the Rough Riders, the regiment trained in San Antonio, Texas, before deploying to Cuba's tropical jungles. The soldiers faced hunger, malaria, and combat losses as they engaged the Spanish Army in multiple battles. Their campaign culminated in a charge at San Juan Hill. Roosevelt maintained a pocket diary throughout, recording daily observations about his experiences and fellow soldiers. His firsthand account conveys the determination and independent character he associated with the campaign. This ebook edition has been professionally proofread for accuracy and readability across devices.
