About this book

The Sociopath Next Door examines sociopathy in everyday life. Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that approximately 4 percent of ordinary people—one in twenty-five—has a mental disorder characterized by the absence of conscience. These individuals cannot feel shame, guilt, or remorse, and may be colleagues, neighbors, or family members. Sociopaths are often difficult to identify because they typically possess a distinctive charisma or charm that makes them appear more interesting, spontaneous, intense, or compelling than those around them. While they learn to display emotion, they are fundamentally indifferent to others' suffering and are driven by a desire to dominate and win. Unlike others, sociopaths cannot genuinely love. Stout teaches readers to recognize sociopathic behavior by questioning authority, suspecting flattery, and being wary of manipulation tactics such as the pity play. The book aims to help readers identify sociopaths they may already know and understand how to respond to that knowledge, framing the dynamic as one between the ruthless and everyone else.
