About this book

More than two thousand years in the future, a small human colony lives on Thalassa, an ocean world where they were sent centuries earlier to ensure humanity's survival before Earth's destruction. The colony has flourished in this peaceful setting with abundant resources. This existence is disrupted when the spaceship Magellan arrives carrying one million refugees from Earth, which is dying and no longer habitable. The novel explores scientific questions of its time, including the solar neutrino problem—why fewer neutrinos from the sun are measured on Earth than expected. Clarke also presents a detailed treatment of vacuum energy as a power source for spacecraft and examines the technical challenges of space travel at near-light speeds.
