The Wartime Book Club

Inspired by true events, The Wartime Book Club tells the story of Grace La Mottée, the librarian of the Isle of Jersey, during the German occupation of 1943. When Nazi authorities order her to destroy books deemed threatening to the regime, she instead hides them away in secret. Determined to resist and provide comfort to the fearful islanders, Grace and her best friend establish the Wartime Book Club, offering residents an escape through reading. As the occupation continues, their quiet acts of resistance grow increasingly dangerous. When tensions escalate to violence, the women confront the real and severe consequences of their defiance. Based on actual historical events, the novel explores how books and reading provided solace and hope during wartime, while chronicling the untold experiences of an occupied island.
