Perfect for you if...

  • You love character-driven literary fiction where the setting feels as alive as the people in it, and you're drawn to stories about small communities and their quiet transformations.
  • You appreciate books that treat love and memory with nuance, exploring how relationships shape us across entire lifetimes rather than just in dramatic moments.
  • You're a fan of Niall Williams' work or Ann Patchett's emotional depth, and you want fiction that lingers in your mind long after you finish the last page.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven narratives with clear conflict and resolution. This is contemplative and meditative, building meaning through atmosphere and reflection rather than action.
  • You're looking for contemporary settings and modern concerns. The rural Irish village setting and the arrival of electricity as a major event signal a story rooted in a different era.
  • You want straightforward romance. Love appears in this novel, but it's examined through the lens of memory and storytelling, not as the main plot engine.

About this book

Set in the rural Irish village of Faha, This Is Happiness follows seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe, who encounters a man named Christy shortly after the rain that has long plagued the western seaboard begins to stop. At the same time, Father Coffey announces the coming of electricity to the village. The novel traces what unfolds after this meeting: Christy's reasons for coming to Faha and his search for a long-lost love, Noel's own experiences with love, and the slow, delayed arrival of electricity—a development that will transform a world that has remained unchanged for centuries. The story explores how narratives shape our lives and remake us, grounded in the everyday details of village life. This is the third novel by Niall Williams set in Faha, following History of the Rain and Time of the Child.
