About this book

In the mid-1950s, the United States Air Force introduced the Voodoo, its most powerful single-seat, two-engine fighter at that time. By the end of the decade, the aircraft was deployed worldwide in tactical nuclear bomber and tactical reconnaissance roles, as well as in homeland defense through a two-seat, all-weather variant. In December 1957, the Voodoo set the World Air Speed Record at Mach 1.6—more than one and a half times the speed of sound. This book examines the aircraft's original design and entry into service. Chapters cover operations during the Korean War, Vietnam War, Cuban Crisis, and Cold War operations in Europe. The account includes first-hand accounts from pilots as well as the author's own experiences with the aircraft. The Voodoo was an elegant, distinctive fighter that represented fast flying in the 1950s and 1960s and remains a respected aircraft.
