Perfect for you if...

  • You cherish stories about childhood friendships and how a single moment can permanently alter the shape of a life.
  • You appreciate literary fiction that treats rural communities and their landscapes with genuine respect and emotional depth.
  • You're drawn to character-driven narratives where the moral complexity of loyalty, conscience, and love plays out across decades.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven stories with clear resolutions and characters who mostly make good choices.
  • You're looking for escapist feel-good fiction rather than emotionally challenging examinations of consequence.
  • You need books with a faster pace. This is contemplative and introspective, which won't suit everyone.

About this book

Nestled in the smoky, rolling peaks of Southern Appalachia, the town of Brevard, North Carolina becomes home to Chris Avery's family in the early 1970s. Chris quickly befriends Walker Davis, the son of a struggling dairy farmer next door, and Walker's best friend Brook Palmer. The three become inseparable, spending their childhood exploring the woods, chasing waterfalls and brook trout in a world seemingly untouched by the outside. When one of the characters commits an irreversible mistake, the idyllic world fractures. Chris finds himself forced to weigh his conscience against his love for the people closest to him, grappling with the consequences of choices that cannot be undone. John Ellington's literary fiction explores themes of lifelong friendship, class differences, and the beauty of unspoiled nature against the backdrop of Appalachian peaks and small mountain towns. The novel won the 2024 Gold Medal Southern Fiction IPPY Book Award and is a finalist for the 2024 Next Generation Indie Book Award.
