Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction grounded in real events and real people, especially Australian history that doesn't get taught in schools.
  • You want a love story woven through adventure rather than standing alone as the main event.
  • You appreciate novels that acknowledge both the heroism and the cruelty of settlement, without looking away from either.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer your historical fiction to stick entirely to documented fact without fictional gaps filled in.
  • You're after a quick, light read; this demands patience with period detail and slower pacing.
  • You want a purely romantic plot; the cattle drive and frontier survival are as central as any relationship here.

About this book

In 1880, fifteen-year-old Charlie Gaunt leaves his home in Bendigo to work as a drover for Nat Buchanan. Two years later, he becomes a key member of one of Australia's greatest cattle drives—the Durack family's journey from Cooper's Creek, Queensland, to the Kimberley. Based on Charlie's largely unknown historical account and supplemented with fictional elements, this novel presents a story unique in Australian literature. The narrative combines an unprecedented adventure with a love story, offering both a celebration of positive aspects of Northern Australia's settlement and a critical examination of its darker elements.
