Perfect for you if...

  • You've read the original trilogy and want to see how Clarke resolves the monolith mystery and what becomes of Bowman and HAL.
  • You're drawn to hard science fiction that takes technological speculation seriously, from AI consciousness to space elevators to genetic engineering.
  • You appreciate philosophical science fiction that poses big questions about human evolution, consciousness, and humanity's place in the cosmos.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with constant action. This is cerebral and contemplative, more concerned with ideas than thrills.
  • You haven't read the previous Space Odyssey books. This finale assumes you know who Bowman and HAL are and care about their fates.
  • You find hard science fiction dry or overly technical. Clarke spends real time explaining the science, which some readers find didactic rather than engaging.

About this book

The fourth book in the Space Odyssey series reveals the mysteries of the monoliths. During a 2001 mission to Jupiter, the supercomputer HAL sent crewmembers David Bowman and Frank Poole into space. Bowman underwent a strange transformation into a Star Child, documented in the novels 2010 and 2061. A thousand years after his death, Frank Poole is revived and finds himself in a technologically advanced world featuring human minds interfacing directly with computers, genetically engineered dinosaur servants, and massive space elevators around the equator. Poole discovers an impending threat to humanity connected to the monoliths. To confront it, he must work with Bowman and HAL, now merged into a single corporeal consciousness—the only being capable of stopping the monoliths' mysterious creators.
