Perfect for you if...

  • You love baseball history and want insider stories from someone who played, coached, and managed across seven decades.
  • You appreciate no-nonsense memoirs where the author critiques the people and systems he's known intimately.
  • You're curious how free agency and money changed baseball's clubhouse culture from the tight-knit 1955 Dodgers era to today.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a gentle, reverent look at baseball legends, because Zimmer isn't afraid to call out pettiness and vindictiveness he witnessed.
  • You're looking for a narrative arc or emotional journey, as this is anecdote-driven and conversational rather than a tightly plotted story.
  • You prefer modern baseball analysis over historical perspective, since half the book contrasts yesterday's game with today's.

About this book

Don Zimmer draws on more than fifty-six years in baseball to offer perspectives on the sport's past and present. His first memoir, Zim-A Baseball Life, was a New York Times bestseller. In The Zen of Zim, he discusses pitching inside, managing, bosses, and other aspects of the game. Zimmer provides an account of his eight years as Joe Torre's right-hand man and describes how his twenty-five-year friendship with George Steinbrenner was ultimately destroyed by jealousy, vindictiveness, and pettiness. He recounts the incident at Fenway Park when he charged onto the field and threw a punch at Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez. He also reflects on working for various baseball owners and evaluates the managing styles of figures including Casey Stengel, Earl Weaver, Gene Mauch, and Billy Martin. In a chapter titled "What Have They Done to My Game?," Zimmer examines how baseball and its players have changed over fifty years, attributing shifts in clubhouse camaraderie to big money and free agency. He contrasts this with his experience on the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, where he formed lifelong friendships. The book combines anecdotes, laughs, and observations from his decades in the sport.
