About this book

In 1975, twenty-three-year-old Tom Michell, an Englishman working as an assistant master at a prestigious boarding school in Argentina, rescues a penguin covered in oil from an ocean spill during a weekend in Uruguay. After cleaning the bird, Michell attempts to return it to the sea, but the penguin refuses to leave his side. Michell names the penguin Juan Salvador and smuggles him back to Argentina, where the bird becomes an unexpected center of attention on campus. Juan Salvador serves as the rugby team's mascot, befriends the dorm housekeeper, attends Michell's parties, and helps coach a shy boy in swimming. Throughout Argentina's economic and political turmoil, Juan Salvador brings joy to those around him, becoming Michell's close companion and kindred spirit. This memoir recounts the surprising bond between Michell and the remarkable bird, exploring how a single act of compassion creates an enduring connection.
